Horst Herget is a wet plate portrait photographer based in Toronto, Canada. He has been fascinated by the process for over a decade. The pursuit of this nineteeth century process is a counterbalance to his professional photography work.
The intent of Horst's portrait work is to create an image that is a testament to the individual's or family's life. These portraits are not candid snapshots. Instead, the sessions are paced to allow sufficient time for subjects to become grounded in the moment. Only then are they captured by the wet plate alchemy onto a plate that will last well into the next century.
As an involved member of the wet plate community for more than a decade, Horst is frequently sought out for speaking engagements and educational offerings. In addition to single and multi-day workshops, he has shared his experiences as panelist with the Artists’ Network, has been an invited instructor during the Contact Photography Festival and has presented to the Photographic Historical Society of Canada. Horst also hosts monthly salons – the Alternative Process Social - at his Daylight Studio for the local artistic community.
