Deluxe Ambrotype $1750.


Four finished plates produced, three are framed on special ambrotype panel boards.

Ambrotypes use the same process as a tintype but uses glass plates instead of aluminum. The glass plates add another subtly to the wet plate process. Glass plates require additional preparation.

A custom set is designed with your consultation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • When can I book a session?

    All sessions except for Classics can be booked any day of the week. Advance notice of more than two weeks is recommended.

  • When can I book a Classic session?

    Classic sessions are typically available the first Saturday of the month. Please enquire for further details, thank-you.

  • What type of payment methods do you accept?

    Payment by e-transfer or cash, thank-you.  

  • Cancellation refund policy.

    One week’s notice is required for cancellations, with full refund. With six days or less a 50% refund will be issued. 

  • Rescheduling policy?

    Five day’s notice is required for rescheduling. The wet plate process requires a great deal of preparation for the chemistry and setting up the lights and camera. Regarding the chemistry, it always needs to be tested advance.  Reserving time in the studio also needs to be consider. Rescheduling with less than five days notice will incur a rebooking fee of $200. 

  • How many can be in portrait session?

    A family portrait of five is manageable. More than five sitters requires advanced notice and may incur modest additional charge for supplementary lighting. 

  • When do I get to see my wet plate portrait?

    You can see your image a few minutes after it is photographed. The plate, however, is not finished. It requires a thorough washing. Then it needs to finished with either Renaissance Wax for the Classic sessions, and Sandarac varnish for the Parlour, Salon and Deluxe Ambrotype sessions.

  • What is Renaissance Wax ?

    Renaissance wax is the method that plates photographed for Classic sessions are finished.

    It is a brand of microcrystalline wax polish and is modern finishing method of sealing and protecting tintype plates. It was developed by the British Museum Research Laboratory and is commonly used in antique restoration and museum conservation around the world. It is not archival, though it will last a very long time. It can be quickly applied and produces a neutral matte finish which.

  • What is Sandarac varnish?
